Know What to Do When a Warning Light Appears

A warning light comes on while you are merging, turning, or halfway through an ordinary drive, and the first question is simple: can I keep going? There is no single color rule that explains every vehicle. Check the symbol in your owner’s manual and pay attention to any change in the vehicle’s behavior.

Identify the symbol first

Once you can do so safely, note the light’s shape, color, and whether it is steady or flashing. The manual explains what that specific symbol means for your car or truck and may give a recommended response. If the symbol is unfamiliar, pull over somewhere safe before looking it up.

Notice how the vehicle feels

A light paired with smoke, unusual noise, loss of power, or a strong change in handling deserves more attention than a symbol appearing by itself. If you see an oil-pressure or engine-temperature warning, follow the manual’s directions and stop safely when it tells you to. Avoid continuing a drive just to see whether the light goes away.

Choose a safe next step

If the vehicle seems to be operating normally, record the warning and check the manual for what to do next; some alerts call for prompt service even when the vehicle still drives. If the light is flashing, the vehicle behaves differently, or you are unsure whether it is safe to continue, pull over safely and contact roadside assistance or a qualified repair professional. The symbol and the manual are more useful than a guess based on color alone.
